Old News & New News

October 2006

Language Arts
We have been busy learning high-frequency words and writing stories to practice those words.  We’ve already learned the words a, I, and see.
We’ve been working on letters and sounds of /a/, and /b/.  We’ll be learning /t/, /d/, /n/, and /s/ this month and learn to be “detectives” as we put all of the sounds together to make words we can read.  We’ve been reading stories about colors and will begin reading about families and enjoying Mrs. Marker’s collection of ABC stories that will help us when we write in our journals this month.  We need to keep our stories that we bring home and our word cards in a safe place and practice them often.  We will bring home more stories and word cards to add to our collection every week.

Math
We finished our unit on Patterning and will be working on Sorting different things in different ways.  We will be working hard at learning to write and recognize numbers 1-20, and counting to at least 25 without any missing numbers in the month of October.

Social Studies
We are using the “Character Counts!” program.  We are learning about Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship.  We talk about how we need to treat each other and act with good character.  October is “Respect” month.  We will be doing lots of activities to learn more about how we can show respect.
We also learned about Johnny Chapman, also known as Johnny Appleseed.  He planted many apple orchards to help the pioneers.

Science
With the new fall season we have been studying changes around us.  We will be watching for more changes going on around us in the month of October.  We have been reading about trees and how the leaves change colors.  Did you know it’s because they aren’t making SUGAR anymore?  Wow!!!

General
Thank you to everyone signing up to come in and volunteer in our room.  Let Mrs. Marker know when you would like to come in and help.  We invite anyone to come in and visit.  Please stop in the office before coming to the room and let them know you are here.
Please take note from the Falcon newsletter that the Campbell's Labels for Education program has changed in the collection of labels.  They no longer take the front panel from their products, but rather the bar code and the Campbell's Kid logo.  Also, Mrs. Marker is looking for volunteers to do the Campbell’s Label program from your home.  It would consist of clipping labels, bundling them, and counting.  At the end of the year the labels will be shipped to the company to put into our “bank”.  Please email or write to Mrs. Marker if you can help with this program at home.

In Our Room
Updated 10/2006

Welcome to our room!  We hope you'll enjoy seeing all of the things we're doing.  Visit often as Mrs. Marker gets new pictures up with all of our new activities.

All About Me!

This is our student featured on the "All About Me!" bulletin board.  Can you guess who it is?
He brought in several pictures of himself and his family.  He told us all about his family.  These are his favorite things:
 book - Polar Express
to eat - steak
TV show - Scooby-Doo
sport or game - football
color - blue
he is special because - he is the youngest in his family
he likes best about himself - "myself"
when he grows up he wants to be - a life guard
he would like to visit - Grandpa Greg

From Caterpillar to Butterfly

Mrs. Marker had lots of caterpillars on her bushes this summer and brought 4 of them to the classroom.  They didn't take long to get all curled up into cocoons.  We planned on them hatching on September 8th, 14 days after they made chrysalises, but to Mrs. Marker's surprise when we got back from Labor Day vacation, they were beautiful monarch butterflies.

Kindergarten Porridge Party

Our Kindergarten class along with Mrs. Nieveen's class has begun the Spanish video series to learn some Spanish words.  The first story we watch is Goldilocks and the Three Bears (Ricitos De Oro Y Los Tres Osos).  We had a great party to kick off the year.  Our class brought the toppings to put on the porridge and Mrs. Nieveen's class brought the porridge (oatmeal.)  We then made a graph to see how many students from both classes picked which toppings.  We also did a graph to see how many liked the porridge and how many did not like it.  Most everyone really like the porridge and we had a LOT of FUN!!!!  Be sure to check out our new Vocabulary link found on our Kindergarten Front Page.  It will have all of our new Spanish vocabulary words so we can practice them with you!

Our toppings for our porridge!  Chocolate chips and flavored marshmallows were the most favorite in Mrs. Marker and Mrs. Nieveen's classrooms.

Apple Party
We had a great time learning about apples, graphing favorite flavors, and making apple sauce to share with Mrs. Nieveen's class.  They made apple pie.  What a great party!

Peeling the apples with an apple peeling machine was so much fun as the peel came off in a long strip and cut the apple into thin slices.  It also took out the core where we learned all of the seeds are kept.
