Jensen Attends GPS, Food Science Workshops

by Tony Jensen

June 22, 2005

Tony Jensen, Freeman agriculture education instructor, attended two workshops during the week of June 13-17 in Lincoln.

The first workshop, Farming with Computer Technologies, focused on the use of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and the evolution of this technology from the past to the future. During this workshop, Jensen and others received curriculum ideas, hands-on activities, and training in using a hand-held GPS unit for uses in the classroom. The group also discussed Internet resources, ways these activities can get incorporated into the classroom, and the use of GPS systems throughout the agriculture industry.

The second workshop, Partnerships in Food Safety Education, focused on providing hands-on, interactive student-led activities in the area of food science. Participants in the workshop received curriculum materials, laboratory materials, and a guide to utilizing food science activities in standards assessments.

"Both of these workshops were hands-on, interactive, and thought-provoking," said Mr. Jensen. "By me personally doing the activities, it really made me think about how I can incorporate these activities and concepts into the ag curriculum."
