Jr. Ag Explorers get their opportunity to pet and hold the rabbits brought by Judy Fitzgerald.

FFA Presents Ag Explorers Program

by Tony Jensen

July 10, 2005

Twenty 1st through 3rd grade students and eleven 4th through sixth grade students enjoyed a fun-filled week learning about agriculture from June 27-July 1 in the ag room at Freeman High School. The junior ag explorers (1st - 3rd grade) ran from 9 to 11 a.m., while the ag explorers group (4th - 6th grade) ran from 1 to 3 p.m.

This first-time event, led by Mr. Jensen and several FFA members, focused on getting elementary students some basic knowledge of agriculture. Topics for the junior ag explorers included animal tracks, leaf drawings, taking care of rabbits, tieing fishing knots, and the world of worms. Topics for the ag explorers included safety in the shop and the farm, food chains and webs, Global Positioning Systems, rabbit care, and the importance of groundwater.

"Overall, the event was a big success," said Mr. Jensen. "The students had fun and learned a few things and the FFA members and I had fun as well."

A special thanks to Judy Fitzgerald of rural Martell for bringing her rabbits and sharing your knowledge with the students. Your help is greatly appreciated!
