January 20, 2006
The ag demonstration team of Jasmine Hagemeier, Jerod Nieveen, and Taylor Hesseltine received first place and qualified for the state contest at State FFA Convention in April. Their demonstration focused on the non-traditional area of winemaking in Nebraska entitled "From Vine to Wine".
Erin Dorn placed 2nd in the Junior Public Speaking contest, which also qualifies her for the state contest. Her speech about avian influenza, otherwise known as the bird flu, discussed information about the flu and what is being done to prevent it. p> Matt Nieveen participated in the FFA Creed Speaking contest, and received 3rd place and is an alternate to the State FFA Convention. During this contest, participants recite the FFA Creed and then answer questions about its content and meaning to them.
The Senior Parliamentary Procedure team of Brooke Wallman, Ashley Weyers, Kristin Kroese, Stacie Goracke, Melissa Hottovy, and Jaycie Vanderbeek also received 3rd place medals and a blue ribbon.
The Junior Parliamentary Procedure team of Megan Milke, Blake Ebbers, Trenton Buss, Max Weber, Katie Schoen, Denae Wolken, and Jamie Buhr also received a blue ribbon.
Melissa Hottovy competed in the Employment Skills Competition, where participants fill out a job application, go through a mock interview, and develop a resume and letter of application. Melissa received a blue ribbon in this competition.
Jaycie Vanderbeek, also in the Junior Public Speaking contest, received a red ribbon for her speech about the ethanol industry and its impact at the national, state, and local levels.
Twelve junior high FFA members also made the trip to Beatrice to participate in the FFA Quiz Bowl Competition. The team of Kyle Schlake, Nathan Milke, Natalie Lenners, and Evan Buss got first place, and the team of Devin Wolken, Phillip Schoen, Kristen Anderson, and Nick Ruskamp got fifth place.
"We had a really good day at the Leadership Skills Events", said Mr. Jensen. "To have 13 schools in our district, it is a very competitive district. To have two state qualifiers and four other blue ribbons is a big success, and these students worked very hard to get the results they saw today."
