Ten junior high FFA members traveled to the Lincoln Children’s Zoo on the morning of Saturday, October 14th. While at the zoo, they took a medical tour that included showing the students the operating table, nursery, x-ray room, medicinal area, and quarantine area of the zoo. The tour guide emphasized that the zoo veterinary staff is a full-time job, where each person is on call 24 hours a day and is often called in to feed or check on ill animals.

This anesthesia machine is used to sedate animals before their yearly physical.
“It was a great opportunity for students to see the behind-the-scenes work that goes on at the zoo,” said Mr. Jensen, Freeman FFA advisor. “It also allows them to see the career of a veterinarian in a different light.”
Students participating in this trip included Marissa Page, Shelby Koenig, Dylan Schoneweis, Nick Ruskamp, Jason Horstman, Anna Dorn, Amber Mason, Jenna Vanderbeek, Allison Evers, and Steph Johnson.

This operating room table is for animals needing surgeries throughout their lifetime at the zoo.
