December 15, 2006
Ten junior high FFA members went to the UNL Food Science Department on December 9th to tour their facilities and get a chance to make and taste-test their own ice cream. The group started out walking through the research and development facilities of the food science department. The group learned how the research is conducted, what each type of machine is used for, and more about the industry of food science and development.
The group then ventured into a lab, where they got to create their own ice cream using an ice cream maker. They picked their favorite flavor and then got to add toppings to create a masterpiece. Some versions of ice cream were preferred over the others, but in the end, it was a good learning experience.
The ten FFA members that went were Jenna Vanderbeek, Shelby Koenig, Amber Mason, Nick Ruskamp, Steph Johnson, Katherine Weber, Allison Evers, Madison Boddy, Savannah Banks, and Mallory Dorn.
