Landscape Plans Progressing at Freeman Public School
Compost Pile, Lasagna Gardening, and Concept Landscape Plan Under Construction

There are several exciting things going on to begin developing the landscape at Freeman Public Schools. The first is the creation of a compost pile at the west end of the west parking lot at the school. The ag classes have created this pile and are in charge of turning and maintaining the pile. The compost will be used in enriching the soil in the front two planters and other areas of the new landscape. If you would like to contribute leaves, straw, grass clippings, or other compostible material, please add to the compost pile anytime.
The compost, as well as other materials, will be utilized when the ag students do what is referred to as “lasagna gardening” in the front planters of the school. Just like lasagna, layers of organic material are added to the soil and watered in to ensure their stability in the planter. Through the fall and winter, moisture and temperature changes encourage the breakdown of these organic substances and provide a good layer of topsoil by the springtime for planting.
Also, a concept landscape plan has been completed of the new construction areas at the school. A concept plan is a tentative plan of what ideas the organization would like to implement into the landscape. If interested in seeing this concept landscape plan, copies are available at the elementary office.
