Junior High students in Mr. Dalrymple and Mrs. Renken’s social studies class recently competed in the school level of the National Geography Bee. Students competed in seven rounds of competition that tested their knowledge in geographic comparisons of U.S. States, U.S. geography, U.S. cities, odd item out, continents, cultural geography, and traveling to world capital cities. The ten students who advanced to the Finals were: Savannah Banks, Chandler Brandert, Abbey Klein, Kellen Unvert, Blake Lenners, Gerrit VanEngen, Ryan Dorn, Austin Ruskamp, Lindsay Hottovy, and Courtney Buhr.
In the final round, students were eliminated when they answered two questions incorrectly and the field was narrowed to two students who would compete in the Championship round. Savannah Banks and Ryan Dorn both advanced to the Championship round with Ryan emerging as the school winner.
Ryan will now take the state-qualifying exam for the National Geography Bee. The top 100 scorers on this exam will compete in Omaha in the state level of the National Geography Bee on April 4th, 2008.
