The AMC 8 is for students in the sixth, seventh or eighth grade; accelerated fourth and fifth grade students also take part. It is a 25-question, 40-minute multiple-choice contest, given the Tuesday before Thanksgiving week. A student’s score is the number of problems correctly solved, there is no penalty for guessing. The material covered is the middle school mathematics curriculum. No problem requires the use of algebra or a calculator..  The Mathematical Association of America sponsors this competition.  In 2007, 150,618 students took part in the AMC 8 Exam.  Fifty-two of these students participated in the contest from Freeman Public School in Adams, Nebraska.  The top winners at Freeman include Alex Richardson and Corey Haynes, who tied for first place.  Seven students tied for third place.  They are:  Dallas Ashelford, son of Joe and Sharla Ashelford; Allison Evers, daughter of Brian and Danelle Evers; Abbey Klein, daughter of Mike and Holly Klein; Katy Veskrna, daughter of Mitch and Charlotte Evans and Les and Karen Veskrna; Blake Lenners, son of Stan and Mary Lenners; Austin Ruskamp, son Lorin and Elaine Ruskamp; and Jeffrey Wallman, son of Wayne and Laurie Wallman.  All seven will be awarded certificates of merit at the Freeman Honors Night in May.  Alex and Corey will also receive pins and will have their names added to the AMC 8 winners’ plaque, which is displayed in the Freeman commons area.
