Freeman FFA Successful At Convention

by Jasmine Hagemeier

April 08, 2008

On April 2-4, the Freeman FFA Chapter traveled to Lincoln to attend the 80th Nebraska State FFA Convention.  The days consisted of attending a legislative breakfast with their local state senator and listening to speakers at workshops and sessions.  Twenty-nine members attended the event, and three teams competed in their respective contests.

Megan Milke, Ashley Ayres, Evan Buss, and Anna Jurgens participated in the State FFA Chorus.  Megan was also a soloist in the first soprano section.  The floriculture team, consisting of Jasmine Hagemeier, Megan Milke, Natalie Lenners, and Kristen Andersen, received a white ribbon.  The agricultural demonstration team, consisting of Trenton Buss, Kyle Schlake, and Matt Nieveen, received a silver emblem plaque.  The junior livestock judging team, consisting of Kyle Schlake, Eric Rapp, Brandon Oltman, and Dylan Schoneweis, received a blue ribbon.  At the sixth and final session of State FFA Convention, Blake Ebbers and Jerod Nieveen received their state degrees.  Three jr. high quiz bowl teams also competed.  These students include Celia Timms, Morgan Lenners, Kyle Schoen, Katherine Weber, Blake Lenners, Austin Ruskamp, Madison Boddy, Brian Nieveen, and Allison Evers.

The Freeman FFA was also awarded the Governor’s Agricultural Excellence Award presented by the Nebraska Investment Finance Authority (NIFA). This grant enabled us to put on the Entrepreneurship Extravaganza in March. The amount for this grant was $1,000.
Upcoming events for the FFA include the annual chapter banquet on April 21st, the petting zoo in conjunction with Elementary Field Day in May.
