Daniel Freeman Native Gardens Planted
Ag Students Plant Entrance to School
May 28, 2008
The Daniel Freeman Native Gardens was planted at the new entrance to Freeman Public Schools on Friday, May 16th. This garden, which consists of native plants that Daniel Freeman probably encountered while settling the area, was planted by agriculture education students throughout the day and Freeman Garden & Landscape Club volunteers Linda Kroese, Lorinda Buss, and Diane Nieveen. Kristina Jensen of the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum also volunteered on planting day to help lay out plants, read the landscape plan, and provide education on proper techniques to planting.
The funding for the native gardens was provided by a Community Enhancement Program (CEP) grant, through the Nebraska Department of Roads. The Nebraska Forest Service and Nebraska Statewide Arboretum also partner up with the Nebraska Department of Roads to provide services to grant recipients.
"It was a great day weather-wise and the students and volunteers worked hard to make sure we got done before school was out," said Mr. Jensen. "We planted 347 plants, and it will be exciting to see their growth and development through the first year and beyond."
