Freeman had eight wrestlers compete in the Turkey Creek
Invitational on Thursday, February 5, and six wrestlers came home
with a medal. This placed the team fourth in team points.
Evan Buss (285) was the lone gold medallist. He defeated all of
his opponents with pins. Chandler Brandert (135), Mitch Hesseltine
(152), and Kevin Weyers (171) all earned a silver medal. Brandert
had 3 pins and an injury default. He lost his final match by a
score of 3 – 9. Hesseltine earned two pins along with an 11-8
decision. He lost the championship match by a decision of 6 – 11.
Weyers pinned three opponents and lost his championship match by a
decision of 7 – 8. Matt Nieveen (130) and Nate Milke (160) both
earned bronze medals for the team. Nieveen won three matches with
pins and lost one match by a decision of 7 – 5 in double overtime
and was pinned in the other loss. Milke recorded two pins and was
pinned twice at the tournament. Alex Richardson (130) recorded one
pin but was short of medalling. Chase Heble (119) also competed at
the tournament, but did not record any wins.
“The team competed well today,” stated Coach Troxel. “We lost
some close matches that could have gone either way. We need to keep
getting better and be able to win these close matches next week. We
have one more week until districts, and need to have a great week
of practice. Many goals that the wrestlers have set could be
obtained by the end of this week.”
Freeman will travel to Sutton for the D-1 District on Friday and
Saturday, February 13 - 14.
