Wrestlers Conclude Season at State Tournament
Freeman Scores 13 Points
February 21, 2010
The Freeman wrestling squad concluded its season when Brian Nieveen (103), Kevin Weyers (171), and Evan Buss (215) participated at the State Wrestling Tournament over the weekend. “The athletes did a great job all season and continued to do so at state,” stated coach Troxel. Nieveen went 2-2 and was just one match away from medaling. He won both of his matches by pin and lost both matches by decision. Both Weyers and Buss lost their first match, and then both won by pin in their next match. Both athletes lost their next match, which eliminated them from the tournament. Freeman ended up in 38th place with 13 points.
The team did an excellent job this season and broke many school records. The team won 220 matches and recorded 176 pins. The freshman, sophomore, and senior win record was also broken.
Freeman had seven out of the twelve wrestlers with a winning record at the end of the season, and out of those seven, five wrestlers won 25 matches or more. We had eighteen tournament champions, and placed second or third in five tournaments. The wrestlers wrestled well and improved throughout the whole season. The squad will lose four talented wrestlers. They are Chase Heble, Nate Milke, Kevin Weyers, and Evan Buss.
Freeman will have a good core of athletes returning on the wrestling squad for next season. The athletes returning won over 100 matches this season.
