Boys Basketball Team Crowned D-1 State Champions

by Bob Michl

March 19, 2010

Freeman High School is the 2010 Class D-1 Boys State Basketball Tournament Champions.  The team capped a 26-2 season with three wins in Lincoln.

On Thursday, March 11, the boys played Sandhills/Thedford in a first round game at Lincoln Northeast High School.  The Falcons defeated a scrappy western Nebraska team and pulled out a 54-43 win.

The win advanced them to a semi-finals game at Pershing Auditorium on Friday, March 12.  Emerson-Hubbard gave Freeman all they could handle. Emerson-Hubbard scored the first sight points of the game before Freeman rallied back.  The score was tied at 30-30 in the third quarter, but Freeman outscored the Pirates 13-6 down the stretch to claim a 43-36 win.

The championship game, played at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Saturday morning, March 13, pitted Freeman against Overton.  Freeman took control early in the game and were never threatened in a 52-38 win.

Freeman's state championship came on the heals of a Runner-Up title in 2009 in the Class C-2 division.

Kyle Schlake and Jordan Pella were named to the all state tournament team.
