Breakfast, Student Fees Among Changes

July 16, 2010
Some significant changes in school policies will affect you and your child during the 2010-2011 school year. This information is being provided to give everyone a "heads up" for the soon to be here school year.
BREAKFAST
Freeman will be offering breakfast to students who wish to eat at school in the morning. For PK-6 students, breakfast will be served from 7:55 to 8:15 am. For secondary students, breakfast will be served between first and second period (8:58 – 9:13). Specific details of the logistics will be worked out in the first few weeks of the program.
STUDENT FEES
The Freeman Board of Education has implemented a student fee for all secondary students for the 2010-11 school year. Any 7-12 student wishing to participate in any extra-curricular activity will be required to pay a small fee for that opportunity.
This fee will be used to help offset expenses of uniforms, equipment, and officiating. For all junior high students, the fee will be $35. For all senior high students, the fee will be $50. This fee is NOT paid for each activity, but instead, one fee is good for the entire year. The only activity not requiring a fee is junior high vocal music. Because this is a required class, no fees may be charged.
In exchange for the fee, all 7-12 students will be admitted into all home activities at the school AT NO CHARGE! The exception is the Sportsman’s Holiday Basketball Tournament, and any Conference or NSAA sponsored activity that Freeman hosts.
All fees must be paid at the HS office before the student may participate in any extra-curricular event. Checks can be made payable to Freeman High School.
If your family qualifies for Free/Reduced Lunches, you may request that the student fee for your child/ren be waived. Simply be approved for Free/Reduced lunches, then complete the Waiver application form in the rear of the 7-12 Parent-Student Handbook.
(NOTE: All handbooks are available on the school website. Hard copies may be obtained from the HS office).
ACTIVTY PASSES
An activity pass will be good for the entire year but will not be honored at any tournament Freeman hosts. This includes volleyball, basketball, wrestling, and JH and JV tourneys.
With adult ticket prices at $5.00, K-12 student ticket prices at $4.00, and non-varsity events $2.00 for adults, an adult year-long ticket value is $113.00.
Freeman will be offering adult year-long passes for $55.00 (a 49% savings). A student season pass, valued at $68.00, will be sold for $35.00 (a 51% savings). Remember, because of the student fees, only K-6 students need to pay to attend regular season events.
A year-long family pass will be sold for $125.00. (The value of the pass for 2 adults and 1 student is $294.00, and if more students attend games, the value becomes even greater).
Season-long passes may be purchased at the high school office only. Simply stop by the office, mail your check, or send a check with your student, payable to Freeman High School (attn: Faith Parde or Dr. Michl).
Year-long passes will not be sold at the gate of any contest. Finally, remember that if you purchase a pass, you will be asked to remember to bring it to contests as there will not be a pass list at the gate.
CELL PHONES
The Board of Education has adopted a policy that will allow students to carry cell phones to school, and use them in commons areas, hallways, and on sidewalks, etc. Students will NOT be allowed to use cell phones in any classroom or during any class time unless the teacher identifies an educational reason to use the cell phone. As students enter classrooms, they will be expected to turn off, mute, or move cell phones to “vibrate” so as not to create a distraction.
Any cell phone that is confiscated will be required to be picked up by a parent. A second and any subsequent violations will mean that the cell phone will be confiscated for the remainder of the semester.
Cell phones have become an integral part of our society. Our plan is to assist students how to use cell phones responsibly.
CITIZENSHIP
The School Improvement Team, along with students and the administration, has put together a plan to promote good citizenship and character among its students. This is reflected in Freeman’s District Goal #3: “All students will increase their respect for other students, adults, and properties.” The Freeman Citizenship Rubric has been developed as a way to record the behaviors of students in the classroom and throughout the school, encourage the students to exhibit positive behaviors.
Beginning with the 2010-11 school year, a Citizenship mark will be given by each classroom teacher for each student in class. This will be accomplished by using the Citizenship Rubric containing four categories (Honorable, Satisfactory, Needing Improvement, & Unsatisfactory) in the two areas of Behavior and Participation.
All students will begin each quarter with a “Satisfactory” mark. Teachers will document any positive or negative behavior on the rubric and discuss any such documentation with the student, and the student will “initial” the documentation. It is possible to move directly to “Unsatisfactory” with one incident, such as plagiarism, fighting, etc. This is addressed in the student handbook and activity handbook in accordance with the Code of Conduct.
If a student is moved to “Needs Improvement,” the teacher and the student will meet together to discuss the problem and to develop a plan for the student to follow to work back to a “Satisfactory” mark. Parents, administration, and the guidance counselor will be informed of this plan. If a student is moved to “Unsatisfactory,” the parents will be asked to join the teacher and student to create a plan. Administration and the guidance counselor may also be invited to the meeting and will be informed of the plan.
Behavior will be monitored throughout the school day. Any incidences in the hallway, lunchroom, etc., will be reported to the guidance counselor. The Citizenship mark for these types of incidents will appear as a “Period 0.” The intent is to promote good character and positive behavior everywhere and at all times.
Citizenship marks will be recorded on PowerSchool at the end of each quarter in each class, but the Citizenship grades WILL NOT AFFECT GRADE POINT AVERAGE.
OPEN HOUSE
Freeman Public Schools will be conducting an OPEN HOUSE on Wednesday, August 11, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. This replaces the Back-To-School night held in previous years. Please, come to the school, bring your student(s) and visit with his/her teachers that evening.
