Freeman Football Team Wins Season Opener
Freeman 40, Heartland 12
On Friday evening, the Freeman Falcons competed against Heartland for the first football game of the season. Freeman had a slow start by scoring one touchdown in the first quarter. Jordan Pella rushed for the first touchdown of the season with an 11-yard run.
Freeman was able to score again in the second quarter with Pella rushing 2 yards. Eric Rapp found open receiver Adam Frerichs for the PAT. Heartland then answered with their first score of the evening by returning the kickoff 70 yards. The score at halftime was Freeman 14, Heartland 6.
The Falcons were able to make some adjustments during the halftime and scored 20 points in the third quarter. Rapp started the scoring explosion with an 11-yard run. Rapp then passed to Pella for a 12-yard touchdown pass. Kellen Unvert then made a huge play for the defense by returning a Heartland fumble 79 yards. The fumble return is a new record for the Falcons replacing the old record of 70 yards. Once again, Rapp found an open Frerichs for the PAT.
Freeman was able to score defensively for their only touchdown in the fourth quarter. Pella intercepted a Heartland pass and returned it for a touchdown by running 50 yards. Heartland scored one more time on an 8-yard pass. The final score of the game was Freeman 40, Heartland 12.
“We had a slow start to this game, and it became pretty obvious that this was the first game of the season,” stated Coach Troxel. “I felt the players learned quite a bit during the game, and were able to make adjustments throughout the game to become a better football team at the end of the night. Playing against Heartland showed that there are a number of items to work on and iron out before playing Diller-Odell."
Freeman will
travel to Diller on Friday, September 11 to compete against the
Diller-Odell Griffins starting at 7:00 PM.
