Kindergarten Porridge Party

The three bears and Goldilocks may have liked porridge, but the majority of the Freeman Kindergarten did not find it pleasing. However, they did enjoy the choice of toppings they put on the porridge.
After a week of reading and discussing various versions of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, the two classes taught by watched a video of the story in Spanish. It was our kickoff into learning Spanish in kindergarten, beginning with counting and color words. We will also learn various descriptive words in Spanish as the year progresses. Every other week we watch a Spanish video then practice new Spanish words. We incorporate these words into calendar time and throughout our day.
Meeting together to eat porridge was an opportunity to discuss the story together. We also pulled in our math skills with graphing how many students took each topping, and then graphing what we thought of the porridge. We counted the results and used comparative words in discussing the graph. Each student will now complete an individual graph to take home and discuss with parents. Mr. Randy Page, our new elementary principal, also joined our porridge party and took part in the graphing.
