March has been officially designated by The National Association for Music Education for the observance of Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM). MIOSM began as a single statewide celebration in 1973, and has grown over the decades to encompass a day, then a week, and finally, in 1985 a month long celebration of school music. The purpose of MIOSM is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children and to remind citizens that school is where all children should have access to music. This month at Freeman, the elementary students will be doing a variety of fun activities to help them celebrate MIOSM. When students arrived at school on March 1st, they found the "Freeman Family Music Tree". Several classes were delighted to see their teacher's name on the tree, and the many ways in which music has touched their life. Did you know that we have three past drum majorettes on staff? One teacher was shown on television when she was 6 years old, as she demonstrated the Suzuki method of piano teaching. We even have a staff member who would take her band instrument on family vacations in the summer, practice in the car, and have talent shows with her family! That's dedication! Most importantly, students learned that even today, these teachers are still enjoying and involved in music in a variety of ways. If you're in the building, stop by and check out our tree. Happy Music In Our Schools Month!
