Fifth Graders Recreate Revolution

As part of their study of the American Revolution, the Freeman fifth graders have been recreating some of the experiences of the Revolution through simulations of events of that time. The simulations provide problem solving experiences through role-playing and reenacting.
Students take the perspective of historical characters living through the events of the late 1700’s by choosing roles, such as farmers or merchants, and joining a group of Loyalists, Patriots, or Undecideds. Scenes from the Revolution are then recreated and they must make decisions and choices that will determine whether they will remain loyal to the English king or fight for their independence. They must also try to persuade the undecided colonists to join their side.
Throughout all the events, students keep diaries of their experiences and feelings about what it was like to live in the colonies and be part of the Revolutionary War.
