Sixth Grade Students Visit SAC Museum

The Freeman sixth grade class enjoyed a wonderful day at the Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum on Thursday, April 28.  The specific field trip experience focused on WWII. The students learned about the bombing raids over Japan, including Doolittle’s Raid and the dropping of the atomic bomb. The museum has one of the planes used in the raid on site. Students also learned about the numerous bombers used in the war, and spent time conducting a simulation game in order to understand the difficulty of this experience related to enemy fire and how much damage a B-17 could withstand and still remain airborne. The students sat around the B-17 housed at the museum during this session. Finally, the formal field trip presentation concluded with a discussion of the Holocaust, using the permanent display at the museum as the foundation of the presentation.

The students were given time to explore and learn about all of the aircraft housed at the museum.  Special attention was paid to Clayton Anderson, the well publicized astronaut from Ashland, Nebraska. Many items on the history of space exploration and Mr. Anderson’s missions are on display at the museum including his space suit. The class had a great day, with many students expressing a desire to return with their families.
