A Day With Julia Cook

“Since boogers swallow germs, and touching germs can make you sick, you should try to never, ever touch boogers with your fingers.” Not exactly the words you expect to hear from an author, but they are the exact words Julia Cook wrote in her book I am a Booger…Treat Me With Respect! Julia shared this book and others with the Kindergarten and First Grade and had their attention the entire hour.

Julia Cook lives in Fremont, Nebraska, and has written 80 books covering a wide variety of social skills that children, and adults, find relative to their own lives. The books teach these lessons in a humorous manner that all can understand and enjoy. Cook gave three presentations to elementary students at Freeman Public Schools on Friday, October 14th. She read her books, talked with the students about the lessons in each story, and talked about the process of writing books. Students in all three presentations were tuned in to Julia’s every word. Students became especially excited when out of Julia’s bag came her traveling companion, the very small dog, Kirby. She used Kirby to demonstrate how easy it is to be deceived by an adult and used this as a safety lesson.

A group of students were able to eat lunch and visit with Julia. After school teachers spent time visiting with Julia, enjoying snacks provided by the Freeman PTO.

Funding for the author visit was provided through grants from the Hevelone Foundation and the Freeman Schools Foundation. We appreciate the generous support of these two foundations; without their support we would be unable to host nationally known authors. It was a wonderful day with Julia Cook!

Julia's book are available for purchase and autographing. Students were given order forms and orders will be sent in the week of October 24. If you wish to order a book with an autograph, please contact Mrs. Nieveen.
