ARRRRGH! The third graders recently traveled to Gold Crest Retirement Center for their first Freeman Friends visit of the year. The theme for the day was “Talk Like a Pirate.” Students went dressed in the pirate hats they had made in class ahead of time. Once there, they partnered with a Gold Crest resident friend and determined their own pirate names based on a decoding sheet. Some names, for example, were Long Blue Legs and Surly Black Dog.

Then, the pirate pairs completed a pirate word search together, each team trying to work faster than the others. The visit continued with several pirate riddles. For example: “Why couldn’t the pirate play cards?” “Because he was sittin’ on the deck!” or “What kind of food do pirates like the most?” “Barrrrrr-B-Que!”

At the end of the visit, there were smiles all around—all parties involved obviously enjoying each other’s’ company. It always amazes me, how much third graders and senior adults have in common!
